Nanocrine: Commercialization of Technology from Federal Labs. Nanocrine, Inc. is a biotechnology platform development startup company focused on the advancement and commercialization of a nanoplasmonic imaging technology invented by the US Department of the Navy. The technology is first-of-its-kind in enabling researchers to detect and quantify molecules in solution using standard light microscopes and is compatible with live-cell imaging. Nanocrine’s President and Chief Science Officer, Dr. Calhoun, will talk about Nanocrine’s journey, benefits of working with federal laboratories, and the challenges associated with bringing a new technology to market.

Dr. Patrick Calhoun is a cell biologist with a background in viral pathogenesis and molecular cardiology. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech and held an appointment as a postdoctoral fellow in the Cardiology Department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His company utilizes micro- and nanofabrication methods commonly used in the semiconductor industry to create “smart surfaces” and sensors for life science research. Prior to pursuing his current career, he enlisted as a US Army infantryman and conducted combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
